There are many words that can be used to describe America in the 1920's... some that come to mind are wealth, excess, greed, individuality, capitalism, recklessness, modernity, industry, and FUN! In your post, discuss one of the following aspects of the Roaring 20's:
The world/American events that led to this dramatic change in culture and lifestyle.
The most interesting/unusual aspects of the 1920's.
The most important events that occurred during the 1920's.
The dangerous results of the 1920's lifestyle.
How the Roaring 20's has shaped America, even now.
The most interesting/unusual aspect of the 1920's era, in my opinion was the creation of the flappers. The women were very provacative and seductive which was not ever seen before in society and it brought much change. Flappers did what society did not expect from young women to do at the time. It was shocking for others to see this rebellious and reckless behavior of these girls. The Flappers were important to the 1920's because they defined for the first time women and their independence breaking the "rules" of the common society where women were looked down upon. They set the pace for women of the future and made it so independence became more accepted and easier to accomplish.
ReplyDeleteThe most interesting/unusual aspect of the 1920's was the influential music. Jazz was popular in this time for it's ability to express people and tell the stories of their lives. In this time, Jazz was considered the "Devil's music" and had many supporters and non-supporters. Like the flappers, it allowed for a new rebellious and reckless behavior from young individuals of this time. It showed a new independence and carelessness from a huge group of people. Public dance halls, clubs, and tea rooms were opened for soloists to sing their jazz songs. Jazz served in contributing to expressionism and individualism for this time.
ReplyDeleteAn important event the shaped America forever was the Great Depression in the 1929. The Great Depression was at the time were Americas economy took a major downfall. Every body lost businesses, lost jobs and lost everything. America was shaped in a new way cause every one had to start fresh a new. It was a huge deficit to America. The Great depression last about 8 years until the start of world war II which America had to help build military equipment which opened up many jobs to help build up the economy.
ReplyDeleteThe most dangerous events that happened in the 1920's were drugs, alcohol, crime, and sex. Drugs have always been a problem throughout history, and unfortunatly still continue to be that way today. Due to alcohol being illegal because of the 18th Amendment, there was a dramatic increase in organized crime. People became desperate for liquor; therefore, many illegal activities took place. The flappers were very seductive and sexually active women, which created an increase in sex among people in the 1920's.
ReplyDeleteI think the most interesting aspect that happened in the 1920's was the fact that intoxicated beverages were prohibited for a while, and that they also had the speakeasy stores where you could buy alcohol illegally. It's interesting how in the eighteenth amendment it was prohibited and by the twenty-first amendment it was repealed.
ReplyDeleteThere were many results that came out of the dangerous 1920's lifestyle. As stated by Christina, drugs, sex, and crime were major factors that contributed to this dangerous 20's way of life. Due to Prohibition, people were not allowed to deal with alcohol in any form, which was supposed to lower the crime rate; however, it actually increased crime because people would do anything to get it. This included pre-planned crime, murder, and rebellion. Not only was alcohol a major problem, but so was the economy. The economy was a danger in a non-violent way. The economy was booming during this time and many people would rack up their credit and not have to pay until a year later. This came to be a problem since in the year 1929, the economy went down the toilet, and everybody was in debt, serching for ways to get money and pay back their debts. The 1920's era was portrayed as a fun, great, wild time, but there were also hidden dangers lurking right around the corner.
ReplyDeleteThe dangerous results of the 1920's lifestyle was the great depression. I believe that one of the reasons for the great depression was the 1920's culture change. In the 1920's people started focusing more on the fun and wild parts of life and less on the work that needs to be done. Acting that way has many consequences, as shown with the great depression from 1929-1940 following the changes of the twenties.
ReplyDeleteI agree with alexis in saying that prohibtion is one of the most interesting and dangerous events of the roaring 20's. The manufactuing, distribting, and possession of alcholholic beverages was prohibited by the 18th amendmant, publicly named prohibition. Later this was repealed by the 21 amendmant but this made it an interesting and dangeroustime due to speakeasys. These were secret bars and clubes where alchohol was sold. They were frequented gangsters like Al Capone who made a fortune on 'bootlegged' alchohol. Cops often raided the speakeasys and many people were arrested and killed in these raids.

ReplyDeleteMost dangerous of all the events in the 20's was the drugs and smoking. The medical technology was so insignificant that people couldn't even figure out that smoking was causing cancer. Children would sit on the corner smoking cigars. The drug use was even worse than the smoking habits. Because amphetamines were used as pain killers in the war, many people were addicts
In the 1920's many things were going on but one of the most significant was the volstead act. On January 20, 1920 it become illegal to sell any beverage containing more than .5% alcohol. People were upset and began brewing their own alcohol at home and even smuggling alcohol through Canada.
ReplyDeleteThe most significant aspect about the 1920's was the abrupt change in lifestyle. Women became more promiscuous with their revealing clothing and seductive acts. Organized violence broke out due to the restriction of alcohol. Men and women could afford luxurious new inventions. Even the media changed life with it's rebellious manner. The 20's left a deep impression on our culture and marked the beginning of a new era.
ReplyDeleteThe most influential event, indeed, was World Wart I. Young people coming from war, Lost Generation, influenced literature and art. During 1920-21 lots of immigrants came to America, bringing new ideas and, apparently, their culture. The economy's skyrocketing made people earn lots of money and be able to pay for all kinds of leisure activities, nevertheless the 18th Amendment (established Prohibition in the United States, during which the sale, manufacture, and transportation of alcohol for consumption were banned nationally) lead to appearing of speakeasies, as there were no places where people could buy alcohol legally, increasing of self-made alcohol, such as bathtub gin, and organized crime groups and flappers. Gangsters used Prohibition profits to move into prostitution, gambling, and narcotics sales. On the other hand, the money spent led to appearance of new technologies, especially automobiles, and radio. At the same time, jazz and dancing rose in popularity, in opposition to the mood of the specter of World War I.
ReplyDeleteIn the 1920's i think the most unsual aspwould be the terms they used. they way or things they said to have meanings for different things were very weird in a way because in our modern society we speak more out wordly and dont have very weird slang such as the 1920's. for example bees knees cats pajamas, dogs, the cats meow are very weird to our generation but back then it was not abnormal.
ReplyDeleteOne of the more unusual aspects of the 1920's were the flappers. Flappers brought with them a new style of dress and culture. This type of thing had never been seen before in the U.S and would be seen as a disgrace by many in the years to come. A flapper by definition is a term applied to a "new breed" of young Western women who wore short skirts, bobbed their hair, listened to jazz, and flaunted their disdain for what was then considered acceptable behavior. Flappers were very unusual in america as they went against the social norm that filled the world around them.
ReplyDeleteThe spirit of the 1920's was marked by a general feeling of discontinuity associated with modernity, a break with traditions. Everything seemed to be able through modern technology. New technologies, especially automobiles, moving pictures and radio put 'modernity' as a large part of the population. Formal decorative frills were shed in favor of practicality in both daily life and architecture. At the same time, jazz and dancing rose in popularity, in opposition to the mood of the specter of World War I. With that, the period is also often referred to as the Jazz Age.
ReplyDeleteThe life in 1920s in the USA was fast and quick there was money and people where spending it also it was after the war and people where happy it was over. The 1920s where also know as the Jazz Age so people where listening to new and exciting music to.
ReplyDeleteI think the most influential event in the 1920s was cars. The price of cars were drastically dropped. This leading to more people being able to purchase cars. Now that people could afford cars more people could find jobs. People also didn't have to rely on the subway or the bus to get to work.
ReplyDeleteThe Roaring 20's resulted in the great depression which was a tragic event in US history. The Great Depression cost many families their lives and created terrible living conditions for many people. People had begun to spend all of their money on things that were not necessities and when the stock market crashed many Americans were without money and lost their homes.
ReplyDeleteI think the most strange/diffrent event in the 1920s was the idea that alcohol was illegal. They had the old stories where they would buy intoxicating beverages illegally. In the eighteenth amendment they had these drinks baned from everyone. By the twenty- first amandment it was legalized. It all happened so fast.
ReplyDeleteI believe the most unusual and exciting aspect of the 1920s was definitely the music. The music was very distinguishable from other decades. It had a bouncy jazzy feel to it that many can recognize. The music in many ways gives a good description of the time period because of its free spirited, fun feeling. This was the way many lived their lives in America in the 20s. They lived without a care in the world, just out to have a good time.
ReplyDeleteThe 1920's I think had many influential yet dangerous aspects. The Great Depression though really hurt many people due to the fact they were living beyond their means. The 1920's really opened peoples eyes about what they could have such as the new automobiles, and having fun while drinking. They started to indulge their selfs to the point were they couldn't get out of the troubles. Americans then started to face hunger and even death due to this.
ReplyDeleteThere were many interesting aspects of the 1920's and one that I thought was really interesting was the invention of automobiles. People began to use vehicles more often because they finally realized that they could get around places easier and save more time. This is interesting to know and to think how much cars have progressed through the decades because cars are now being used on a daily basis. By reading many articles and websites of vehicles in the 1920's, I personally am very thankful for this invention because I would not want to take the long commute to school and have to walk.

ReplyDeleteOne of the most dangerous aspects of the 20’s was the amount of alcohol that was being consumed. It got so out of control that the government formed the 18th amendment which prohibited drinking. This however, only caused “Speakeasy’s” to be formed, which were places that illegally served alcohol. It was a time where people were raging dangerously out of control.

ReplyDeleteIn the 1920's everyone in america was all about partying and have a good time. Also people liked to spend money and make money. The biggest event in the 20's was the great depression which started in 1929. It was a result of the stock market crashing and people spending to much of there money. People did not think much about the America's future because most of them were greedy.

ReplyDeleteThe lifestyle in the 1920's had many dangerous results. People were at all times thowing parties, this entailed a great deal of drinking and smoking. ths along with whatever antics the party goers were commiting could pose problems to one's physical health. The parties in the 1920's also included a great deal of breaking the law. Being cought in one of the parties you went to could easily find you in jail. For those who were gangsters... well the implications are obvious. At any rate the common lifestyle in the 1920's was very dangerous, but then again maybe thats why they did it?

ReplyDeletePersonally, the most effective even to happen during the 1920's was Prohibition in the United States. It caused many people to distribute alcohol underground and criminal activity. It was successful by the amount of liquer consumed, but conspiracy against the law was high. It became greatly unpopular during the age of depression mostly in cities. Hard liquers were bannded in certain counties, such as brandy and whiskey. Dry counties, make it so that no alcohol can be boughten from stores. Drunken people lessoned during the the prohibition act. It was succesful, but also caused alot of crime.

ReplyDeleteI think that the most significant event that shaped the 1920's was a continuation of what jorden said. The Great Depression was a severe worldwide economic depression in the decade preceding World War II. The timing of the Great Depression varied across nations, but in most countries it started in about 1929 and lasted until the late 1930s or early 1940s. It was the longest, most widespread, and deepest depression of the 20th century. In the 21st century, the Great Depression is commonly used as an example of how far the world's economy can decline.
One of the more unusual aspects of the roaring 1920’s were the unusual words used. The way the people used a sense of language was quite different than ours now, in the 20’s they used different words that did not even sound alike what they ment. The slang that they used a weird slang as you could call it, using words such as Gams, meaning a woman’s leg. These types of words are not used in our age now because we have modernized our new creative language!
ReplyDeleteI think that the biggest 1920's event that happened was the rise in crime. Because alcohol was illegal, people craved it more than ever. This caused many problems, as people now were creating their own home brews for alcohol, often refereed to as moonshine. the citizens were also starting to make their own drinking groups in a revolt against the country. With all the extra money that people had, they were able to spend it on illegal activities. This created a huge epidemic in the 1920's.
ReplyDeleteThe dangerous results of the 1920's lifestyle was because alcohol and people donnt care what happens to them when they are drunk. Because people abused it and so the country had to make a laws involving alcohol. People also thought that there would be no log term effects from it like alcohol poisoning and liver disiese. that is one of the effects of the 1920's.
ReplyDeleteIn my opinion the most dangerous aspect of the roaring 20's was the use of drugs and alcohol. Drugs and alcohol are evident in our society today and continue to cause problems. They are addictive and as a result of the 18th amendment that prohibits the use, transport, and sale of alcohol, crime rates and violence increased throughout the cities. Something that resulted from the demand of alcohol was the "speakeasy" which were organizations that illegally supplied alcohol to those who wanted it. Drugs and alcohol caused problems.
ReplyDeleteI think the most interesting aspect that happened in the 1920's was the United States was trying to convert from a wartime to peacetime economy. When weapons for WW1 were no longer needed, there was a temporary stall in the economy. After a few years, the country prospered and America became the richest nation on Earth and a culture of consumerism was born.
ReplyDeleteIt was the time of the $5 workday, good worker pay for those days. People spent money for better roads, tourism, and holiday resorts. Real estate boomed which sent land prices sky rocketing. This day an age learned to grow and prosper instead of falling behind and being in debt. They learned to enjoy life for what it is and make a brighter future for all.
That last one was Aarin A! Sorry!

ReplyDeletethe roaring twenties changed the way that people live today because they learned many lessons from everything that they did. for example all of the drinking and the partying resulted in many issues, so they made the 18th amendment stating the abolishment of intoxicating substances. this amendment did not last very long but it did lead to the modern laws of drinking
